                                       Lingo Award Blog

11th April 2014 I started my journey to study at Fujian Normal University for 2 weeks during the Easter holidays, using the money I was awarded from the Lingo bursary. After a rather bumpy flight I arrived in Fuzhou, the capital and one of the largest cities in China’s Fujian province. I was also greeted by two pupils from the university who accompanied me to the accommodation on campus.

The accommodation was actually the international student dormitory of the university, so I was able to meet some students already studying there.

The following Monday there was an opening ceremony, which included a speech from the dean of the university. The same day, classes commenced. I had 3 hours of intense Chinese language classes every day, including the weekends. As well as the Chinese language classes, the university had organised a busy schedule complete with other cultural activities; including paper cutting, calligraphy, singing and mask painting. Below is an image of the beautiful building which I studied in.

Another of the activities organised by the University was a trip to the Panda Reserve.

We also took a trip to a nearby town called Putian, where we joined huge celebrations for the birthday of the sea goddess, Mazu.

One of the last trips consisted of visiting a local primary school, where I had the opportunity to take a short English language lesson. I was then invited to have dinner at the house of one of the teachers from the school, where we had dinner and watched the teachers daughter play some musical instruments.

One of the main highlights of visiting Fuzhou for me was being able to taste the weird and wonderful sea food dishes.

I also had the opportunity to meet up with the parents of my Chinese language tutor from UCLan. I was invited round to their house, and taken to a nearby temple.

Overall the trip to Fuzhou really was amazing. It was great to see such a different part of China, as I had previously studied in Chengdu. This trip took place just before my final year exams, and to receive some intense studying beforehand really paid off. I am so grateful to have been awarded the Lingo bursary, and would encourage anyone to apply for it next year!
